How Much Do You Know? – Why Do We Shake Hands On Meeting?

May 31, 2008 at 6:22 am | In General | Leave a Comment

Today’s Q&A won’t have an image with it as no matter how hard I look I can’t find one that goes well with the subject! Instead you’ll just be getting a little bit of knowledge…

Why do we shake hands on meeting?

Students of folk-lore trace the origin of handshaking to primitive magic; the physical contact of the hands symbolized that each of the parties yielded himself up to the power of the other and united with him in peace and friendship; or signified the ratification of a compact or pledge. We still clinch an agreement or a business deal by “shaking hands on it.” This element of contact is clearly seen in the Roman marriage ceremony, in which – as also among the ancient Hindus – the clasping of hands by the bridge and bridegroom was a prominent feature.

How Much Do You Know?

‘A book of fascinating questions and answers on every subject’

I was very excited to see this book whilst passing the time in my local charity shop today! For some reason I was never a ‘Why Child’ but instead I have become a ‘Why Adult’!

Over the past few years there have been allsorts of weird questions that I have decided I MUST know the answers too! My latest crazy question that made MBF chuckle for hours was…‘How do seedless grapes work? Surely they should be extinct?!’

You can all stop laughing now too! I am sure loads of people have wondered the exact same thing…so I was asking for everyone, not just me ;)

So, today I saw this book, ‘How Much do you Know?’, which was published around 1940 and I thought I must buy it to see just what interesting things it answers…and whether the answers would still be the same now!

Unlucky for you all I have decided to write 1 question and answer from the book here everyday…until we reach the end! :) I’ll also try and get one of my pictures to go along with the days question! We’ll start at the beginning which is the ‘General Knowledge’ section…Here’s how it starts…

The man or woman who can talk interestingly is the life and soul of any group of people. To be able to do so one must have at least a nodding acquaintance with a large variety of subjects, for in general conversation no one can say what topic will crop up. The following section contains about 250 questions and answers covering almost every aspect of life.

And today’s question and answer…

Why is the sky blue?

The rays of the sun, in striking the earth’s atmosphere, are scattered by the countless specks that fill the air, the blue rays being scattered farther than the red. It is thus the blue rays we see, and which lead us to believe that the sky is of that colour. If the air were free of all particles of dust, the sky would be quite dark, relieved only by the brightness of the sun and the moon and of the stars, which would then always be visible.

Garden Open Day May 25th 2008

Hall Place, Leigh

The House was built in 1872 by well known local Victorian Architect George Devey for Samuel Morley replacing the original house on a new site and is still occupied by members of the family. Part of the house was burnt in a fire in 1940 and has subsequently been turned into a house garden by the late Lord Hollenden.

Flower Frame

The Garden is open in aid of the National Garden Scheme in the spring for the daffodils and camellias and early summer for the late rhododendrons and roses.

A place to rest

Arthur Hellyer, writing in Country Life in 1989 ranked the garden among “The best 19th Century gardens in the country”.

Summer house

Among it’s fine features is an 11 acre lake, home to large numbers of waterbirds. The mile long walk gives ever changing views of the house and grounds.

I just wanted to let you all know I am still here but I have been gradually getting worse again over the last couple of weeks. Today has been a bad day and I am just trying to sleep as much as I can so that I don’t have to feel like this :(

You guys have listened to me moaning about all my ailments enough in the past so I’ll spare you the details and just say that when I am feeling better I will try and post a little more.

I did manage to take a quick photo of Roddy, one of the cats, the other day so I’ll leave you with that…

So much to do and so little time!

I promise I will get a few more days of my Mull diary posted soon! However, tomorrow I am off to Liveprool VERY early in the morning and although I will be coming back the same day I have no doubt it is going to take a few days for me to recover from the journey!

Tomorrow is the start of 5 weeks of travelling ‘oop north, thankfully the last couple of weeks I will be staying overnight so that should make things a little easier on me! I am a little apprehensive about the sessions I will be attending as they are likely to be quite emotional but I also expect to get a lot out of them. MBF and I have a ‘philosophy’ these days…no matter how much we both wish we could we know that we can’t change whats happened in the past, but, maybe we can help others now and in the future, so some good will come of all we have been through :)

The new website is starting to take shape and I am currently speaking to a documentary camera crew about one of the projects I am working on so it’s all going well right now :)

I am still struggling with various health ‘bits’ which are worse in this hot weather we are having but just 1 month and I’ll hopefully know for sure exactly what it is that I am fighting :)

Just a quick post from me today, so much to do and far too little time! I’ll leave you with a shot of my ‘office’! I had to go and buy another desk as I am working on so many different projects that my computer desk just wasn’t big enough! Anyway, here it is…

More from me soon :)

Am I still gardening?

Yes I am! :)

When I moved in November last year I had no choice but to ‘lose’ my balcony garden :( This caused me a lot of upset as it had been something I put my all into in the early part of 2007. I loved growing things from seed and then spending the summer watching them flower, but, it was difficult for me to move it all so most of it stayed in Yorkshire.

For the last 3 or 4 months I haven’t really been well enough or had enough energy to pick up where I left off but on one good day I had in March I dug out my gardening box, bought myself some new pots and decided to create a little patio garden outside my room. I have patio doors in my room so it’s just a few steps for me to get to my new ickle ‘greenhouse’ and my now flourishing patio :) To allow me the ability to move around without the chance of me tripping over something or getting my sticks caught up I don’t really have too many bits and pieces out there but it’s still better than I thought I’d be able to manage this year!

So, after spending an hour in the garden today I thought I would share a few shots I took of my pots :)

Plants here include lilies, a small geranium and Love-in-a-Mist

Plants here include sweetpeas, dwarf runner beans and a ‘bleeding heart’.

The strawberries in the middle here are doing really well already!

My other sweetpea and a small section of my ickle ‘greenhouse’!

Isle of Mull, April 2008 – Day 2

Sunday 6th April 2008

Wildlife Spotted

Lots of Deer and Stags, Cormorant, Highland Coos and Baby coos (VERY cute)…and sheep!

I had a pretty decent nights sleep and my bed is lovely and comfortable! I was up at about 8am and made MBF a cup of tea and a bacon sarnie, the perfect way to wake up! :)

Today, G a friend of ours from TRn is coming over to stay for a couple of days. I enjoy MBF’s company but it’s also nice to see the odd other friendly face every now and again ;) G joined us on Mull in October 2007 and we had a great couple of days so I was looking forward to seeing him again :)

We had a lazy morning watching all the different coloured birds enjoying the feeders on our balcony and trying our best to use the bird book to identify some of them!

Around 1pm we set off to Craignure to meet up with G. The next couple of days would mainly be ‘boys stuff’ which many might think quite boring, however, I do actually enjoy admiring the scenery from ‘my’ side of the car :) G disembarked from the ferry right on time and it wasn’t long before we were heading into the mountains and straight into a rather heavy snowfall! In normal circumstances I am a huge fan of snow but on this occassion it was just a little scary as at times we couldn’t really see too far ahead of us! Looking out for deer etc was quite difficult and it slowed our pace some what…but pretty soon it was gone! Not much to report from the drive apart from one little incident with a larger vehicle, not sure now if it was a van or some sort of small lorry. Unfortunately it came towards us just at the point where there were no passing places, never a good thing on a single track road, and made worse by the fact that we were right on the edge of a cliff with nothing but a few blades of grass between us and…well…the end of this diary! As much as I would like to praise MBF for his excellent driving abilities I’m afraid this time he pushed things a tad too close to the edge for my liking…G was behind us and said we had about 12″ or so before the back wheel would have slipped over the edge, but, all I could see was the sea which looked a very long way down and in my mind meant our luck had run out!

After escaping the nasty barrierless cliff edge we were pleased to see a brickwall between us and the sea and pretty soon we were back at the house. The shot below is of the 3 of us chilling out in the lounge…

On our last trip to Mull we brought the video camera along and I managed to capture a little footage of a one of the drives we did with G. Just to give you an idea of what we got upto this trip I have posted a video clip below…warning, this ends quite suddenly as all four wheels of the car leave the ground flying over a little bridge! I wasn’t prepared for this and needed soothing gel rubbing on my lower back for the rest of the week!!

A fairly quiet day photography wise today :( When we arrived back at the house we had a little rest and then I cooked steak for us all for tea and we took a little walk to the Bellachroy (again) for a wee dram and a little baileys for me before bed :)

Holiday Hints and Tips:

Roads: The map below shows one of Mull’s greatest drives and is the way we drove today! Through the mountains, along some of the most beautiful coastline Mull has to offer and ending at the oldest Inn on the island! I would highly recommended this route for anyone who enjoys driving (oh and a must for all Roadster owners!) :)

Happy Days

Isle of Mull April, 2008 – Day 1

Saturday 5th April 2008

5am! Yes, we really did get up at such a horrendous hour! We were off to meet A for some sunrise shots at Roker Pier. It had been far too long since we had seen A and this photography ’shoot’ was well over due. We arrived at the car park around 5.30am but sadly Sunderland had ordered….SNOW!

A arrived shortly after us and after a little chat we decided the weather didn’t look like it was going to change for awhile so we headed back to the B&B for a cup of tea and a catch up. In a way I am glad the weather wasn’t so great as it was good just to talk and laugh together again. It also meant we just had to stroll down the corridor for breakfast before we set off for Oban.

Saying goodbye to A came around far too quickly but I had to make sure we didn’t get lost on our way out of Sunderland so there was no time for tears!

The journey from Sunderland to Oban took around 6 hours and we went through some beautiful scenery including Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. Unfortunately, having stayed awake for most of the boring motorway, I fell asleep just as we were driving through the nicest parts…there was always the way back! ;)

When we arrived in Oban I was quite excited and finally felt like I was on holiday! It amazes me that the ferry to Mull always seems to be busy! We were booked on the 4pm boat and after a small delay we finally drove on to the boat and into a ‘disabled’ spot next to the lift.

On our last trip we went up on to the open deck to look at the scenery and take a few photos but unfortunately the lift wasn’t working by the end of the journey and I had to walk down 3 or 4 steep flights of stairs so this time we decided just to head to the bar and have our first holiday beer :)

Just to show you all the sort of views you are greeted by as the ferry travels over to Craignure here’s a photo of Duart Castle taken from the boat…

The 40 minute trip passed extremely quickly and both MBF and I couldn’t wait to get on to the island and start enjoying the roads! It may sound silly to most but I love being driven around in MBF’s ickle car, it’s difficult to describe why…it’s just great fun and with the single track roads I think he enjoys it too :)

The sign above is the first thing that greets as us we disembark from the ferry and begin the half hour drive to Dervaig where we will be staying for the week. We were pleasantly surprised when we pulled into the drive and saw the house…

Situated just a few minutes walk from Kilmore church and the Bellachroy pub, Half Moon House is a beautifully presented upside down house! The bedrooms are on the ground floor and the kitchen, dining and living areas are upstairs. This allows you to enjoy the fantastic views across Dervaig and also to watch the many different types of birds that visit the balcony all day long to chomp on the feeder!

After two very long days of travelling MBF and I were very tired so after unpacking the car we headed over to the Bellachroy for a bite to eat and then home for an early night :)

Holiday Hints and Tips:

Travel: Caladonian MacBrayne Ferrys – There are 3 ferry routes between the Isle of Mull and the mainland with the Oban to Craignure ferry being the biggest and busiest. We haven’t managed to make an early ferry but have been told that the breakfasts are excellent!

Accommodation:

April Guesthouse – Lovely B&B within minutes walk of Roker pier (at least I think it’s a pier!). Great breakfast and very friendly owners.

Half Moon House, Dervaig – for anyone who intends to visit the island as a group or family this house is absolutely perfect! John, the owner, is extremely helpful and if you are seriously thinking of a trip to Mull I would recommend visiting the website and dropping him an email :)

Food & Drink: The Bellachroy – The oldest inn on Mull offers a warm welcome, great food and an excellent Malt Whisky Menu! Defintely worth at least one visit when staying on the island :)

Happy Birthday…well almost!

Well, today turned out a lot better than I had expected! This morning I had a conference call with 2 people from Australia, 1 from New Zealand and another here in the UK regarding some brain tumour related work I am currently doing. It went very well and I am looking forward to getting stuck into all the great projects I am involved with at the moment.

After the conference call a very dear friend of mine and his girlfriend came over to take me for lunch and then we went for a walk in the bluebell woods near here so I could take a few photos. This first one is my two friends carrying my tripod and camera bag :) This tends to be the view I get of most people these days…

As we were walking through the woods to the bluebells we saw a few of these little wigwams, they looked kinda cool…

Then we finally arrived at the carpet of flowers :) I didn’t take many photos but this was probably one of my favourites from the day :)

Tomorrow I will be posting the first day of my Isle of Mull diary :) Sorry it has taken me so long but life has been pretty busy just lately!

A quick request before I go to bed, if you have a spare moment and can send some thoughts or prayers my way I would greatly appreciate it. I have been gradually going down hill the last 5 days and things don’t seem to be easing :( I am supposed to be going to see MBF this weekend and heading to our favourite seaside resort for a little ‘birthday break’ but if I am not any better tomorrow then I won’t be able to go :( Any help I can get so that I wake feeling brighter would be cool! :)

Thanks to all those who sent me birthday wishes too, you really are a great bunch of virtual buddies {{HUGS}}
